The Eldridge relief carved sign was a commission job for Megan. Megan wanted to get her dad something unique for Christmas and asked if I could carve a sign with a buck deer and her dad’s name on it. She supplied me with a deer photo that she liked and I went to work on the sign.
Stages of the Eldridge relief carved sign
The first thing I did after the wood was prepared, was to transfer an outline of the photo onto the wood, and to layout the name under the sketch of the deer.
The sign is carved from one piece of basswood. Basswood is a good wood to use for a project like this because…
The sign was carved with only a few basic hand hand tools and took about X hours to complete the actual carving portion of the project. Anyone with some basic tools, a piece of basswood and some time, could accomplished something similar to what you see here.
After the carving was completed, the sign was stained with some color added.

After staining, the sign was given a glossy finish and a gold plated chain added for hanging. The carving is signed by the artist on the back.
We hope that Megan’s dad is enjoying the sign!
Wow I love your work and want to say thankyou for the tutorials. I am new to wood carving but am un-able to obtain whittling tools at the moment 😟
